We Received Funding to Support Black Male Teachers in PreK-12 Classrooms

The He is Me Institute is proud to announce its selection as a member of the Diverse Teachers cohort at NewSchools Venture Fund, generously supported by the Walton Family Foundation.

He is Me, led by Robert Hendricks, Founder and Executive Director, is one of 14 organizations in the cohort. Each cohort member is committed to enhancing the recruitment, development and retention of underrepresented teachers, (including Black, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native American/Alaskan Native teachers). In addition to financial support, NewSchools will provide management assistance and create a community of practice for the cohort members.

"I'm excited that NewSchools decided to support our efforts to add more diverse perspectives to the teaching force," said Hendricks. "There is a growing body of evidence that supports the notion that Black male educators have strong impacts on student learning,” he added. “Despite that fact, nationally, only 2% of teachers are Black men. In Boston Public Schools, that number is more like 1%. NewSchools will provide financial and management support as we work to empower more Black men to realize that they can teach, want to teach, and need to teach in our classrooms.”

About He is Me Institute

The He is Me Institute is a Boston-based nonprofit organization founded in 2018. We host STEAM programs for middle school boys of color and recruit Black men in college to serve as teaching fellows to facilitate the lessons. The fellows also spend time exploring their teaching experiences, their historical relationship with schools, and their overall perspectives given their own identities and personal stories. Upon college graduation, teaching fellows matriculate into teacher residency programs to hone the technical skills of teaching before entering the classroom as a full-time lead teacher.
