Only 23% of Black men with education degrees find themselves teaching in the classroom.
When Black boys are matched with a Black teacher, they are 39% more likely to complete high school. With more effective Black male teachers in front of kids, we can see improved achievement, especially for Black boys.
Only 2% of teachers identify as Black men. Many of those teachers say that authentic experiences are a leading factor in why the decided to teach. We have the chance to cultivate an environment for Black men to thrive as educators through our Fellowship Program.

What is the Education
Equity Fellowship Program?
We fill the pipeline for Black men to become educators by working directly with college students to gain theoretical and practical experience in teaching through research and mentorship opportunities, then stay with them until they land a full-time teaching position.
Our pipeline for Black males to obtain and retain careers in teaching.

Kinda. If you are not a rising senior or if you are still discovering if you’d like to explore teaching deeply, you can apply to be a mentor only. Mentors co-facilitate of I AM KING sessions, but do not register for the summer course nor do they complete coursework during the year.
Fellows should expect to work full-time during the summer (40 hours per week) and part-time during the school year (5 hours per week).
Fellows receive an annual stipend of $5,000.
Because of generous donations and college partnerships, the fellowship is no cost for individual students. In fact, students are paid a stipend for joining the fellowship!
In the spring, fellows apply to our partner teacher residency programs. During their 1-3 years as a teacher resident, fellows gain more exposure to teaching, learn more theoretical and technical skills to be effective, and earn state teaching credentials. Alumni are also enrolled in Profound Gentlemen, where they receive ongoing development unique to the experiences of male teachers of color.
Beginning in June, fellows are registered for our Reclaiming Our Identity course, where they are introduced to identity development, specifically focusing on the socioeconomic, sociocultural and sociopolitical factors that influence the complexities of identity. This is when fellows learn the context of the education landscape in which they will teach. In September, and throughout the school year, fellows are enroll in our I AM KING mentoring program. They co-facilitate a 12-week curriculum for middle school boys of color in activities related to social-emotional learning, racial identity awareness, and language acquisition.
Yes. Fellows must be enrolled in one of our partner colleges and universities. If your school isn’t currently a partner, please let us know!
Fellows must be enrolled in one of our partner colleges and universities as an undergraduate student. Fellows must also be entering their senior year to join the fellowship in the summer.
Our goal of $12,000 will allow us to provide our full mentorship program to a cohort of middle school boys of color.
